1.1 Laparoscopic inguinal hernioplasty
Laparoscopic inguinal hernioplasty, also known as laparoscopic groin hernia repair, is a relatively new surgical technique for treating inguinal hernias. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. During the procedure, the surgeon uses a laparoscope to repair the inguinal hernia through small incisions in the abdominal wall. The surgery typically takes about one to two hours.
1.2 The surgical procedure
- The surgery is scheduled in the operating room of the hospital and performed under general anesthesia.
- The surgeon makes an approximately one-centimeter incision below the patient’s belly button to access the abdominal wall and perform the laparoscopic procedure. A laparoscope, which is an instrument with a high-definition camera, is used to transmit images of the surgical area to a monitor, allowing the surgeon to observe the internal condition and perform the procedure accordingly.
- The surgeon creates two 5-millimeter incisions in the abdominal wall to introduce the minimally invasive instruments, which replace the surgeon’s hands during the procedure. This significantly reduces the size of the surgical incisions.
- Using these instruments, the surgeon identifies and removes the hernia sac and repairs the defect in the abdominal wall by placing a synthetic mesh to cover the opening. This helps prevent hernia recurrence.
- After achieving hemostasis, the incisions are closed using absorbable sutures, and waterproof dressings are applied to protect the surgical wounds.
- This minimally invasive approach is a relatively newer surgical method that not only reduces postoperative pain for patients but also effectively lowers the risk of hernia recurrence, with only about 1-2% chance of recurrence.
- The surgery typically takes around one to two hours.
- After the procedure, the patient rests in the recovery room, and it is generally recommended to stay overnight for rest and observation.
- The advantages of this minimally invasive hernia repair include smaller incisions compared to conventional methods. Patients experience significantly less postoperative pain and have shorter recovery times.
- Patients can usually return to work within approximately 2-3 days of rest.
- The recurrence rate after surgery is extremely low, at only about 1-2%.
1.3 Post-operative care
Hospital Care
- Due to the use of anesthesia during surgery, you may feel tired, weak, or dizzy after the operation, but these discomforts will gradually disappear.
- The doctor will prescribe pain medication after the surgery, and you can take it as needed following the doctor’s instructions.
- Since you underwent surgery under general anesthesia, the nurse will ask you to refrain from eating or drinking for 4 hours after the surgery.
Wound Care
- After the surgery, your wound has been covered with sterile dressings and gauze. Please keep the wound clean and dry.
- Most wounds are sutured with absorbable sutures, which will dissolve and be absorbed naturally, so there is no need for suture removal. If suture removal is necessary, you must come back to the clinic on the specified date.
- If the wound is covered with waterproof dressings, you can shower as usual on the day after the surgery. After showering, please ensure that the waterproof dressing remains dry and clean.
- If you experience increased pain at the surgical site or symptoms such as redness, swelling, tenderness, bleeding, intensified abdominal pain, or fever (temperature above 38°C or 100°F), please contact the doctor immediately.
Postoperative Activities
- After the surgery, you can resume eating normally. We recommend drinking plenty of water and consuming high-fiber foods to prevent constipation.
- We advise you to engage in only light activities within 48 hours after the surgery.
- During the initial postoperative period, please apply pressure to the wound when sneezing or coughing to prevent suture rupture and reduce pain.
- Please avoid strenuous exercise for 6 weeks after the surgery.
- It is appropriate to resume sexual activity only when the wound is painless.
