Inguinal Hernioplasty 傳統腹股溝小腸氣修補手術
1.1 Inguinal hernioplasty
Conventional (open) inguinal hernioplasty, also known as open inguinal hernia repair surgery, is the standard surgical procedure for treating inguinal hernias. Depending on the patient’s physical condition, the surgery can be performed under general anesthesia or regional anesthesia. The surgery typically takes about one hour (unilateral).
1.2 Operative procedure
- Depending on the patient’s physical condition, the surgery can be performed under general anesthesia or spinal anesthesia.
- The surgeon will make an approximately 5 cm incision in the inguinal area to locate and remove the hernia sac, repair the hernia defect, and place a synthetic mesh in the inguinal canal to prevent recurrence.
- After achieving hemostasis, the surgeon will suture the incision with absorbable sutures and apply waterproof dressings to protect the surgical wound. This surgical technique is internationally recognized as the most effective method for inguinal hernia repair, with a recurrence rate of only about 1-2%.
- The surgery usually takes about 1 hour.
- After the surgery, the patient will rest in the recovery room and then be transferred back to the ward once fully awake. The patient will be observed in the hospital for one night. If the patient’s condition permits the next day, he/she can be discharged and go home to rest. One week later, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled at the clinic to check the wound.
- One drawback of this surgery is that it involves a larger incision, which may result in more post-operative pain and longer recovery time for the patient.
- Patients typically need to rest for about 5-7 days before returning to work.
- The recurrence rate after the surgery is extremely low, at only about 1-2%.
1.3 Post-operative care
Nursing Care
- Due to the use of anesthesia during surgery, you may feel tired, weak, or dizzy after the procedure, but these discomforts will gradually fade away.
- The doctor will prescribe pain medication after the surgery, and you should take it as directed if necessary.
- If you had the surgery under general anesthesia, the nurses will ask you to refrain from eating or drinking for 4 hours after the surgery. If the surgery was performed under spinal anesthesia, you can have fluids and food once you are fully awake, following the instructions given by the nurses.
Wound Care
- After the surgery, your wound will be covered with sterile dressings. Please keep the wound clean and dry.
- Most wounds are sutured with absorbable stitches, which will dissolve and be absorbed on their own, so there is no need for stitch removal. If stitch removal is required, you must return to the clinic on the specified date for the procedure.
- If your wound is covered with waterproof dressings, you can take a shower as usual the day after the surgery. After showering, please ensure that the waterproof dressing remains clean and dry.
- If you experience increased pain at the surgical site, redness, swelling, tenderness, oozing, worsening abdominal pain, or a fever (temperature above 38°C or 100°F), please contact your doctor immediately.
Post-operative Activities
- After the surgery, you can resume your regular diet. We recommend drinking plenty of water and consuming high-fiber foods to prevent constipation.
- We advise you to engage in only light activities within 48 hours after the surgery.
- In the early stages of the post-operative period, when you sneeze or cough, please apply gentle pressure to the incision site to prevent bursting of the stitches and reduce pain.
- Avoid engaging in strenuous exercise for 6 weeks after the surgery.
- You should wait until the wound is pain-free before resuming sexual activity.
